Does Ace Hardware Sell Craftsman Tools? The Definitive Answer
The answer is a complicated yes. While Ace Hardware doesn’t typically stock a wide variety of Craftsman tools, they do offer a limited selection online through partnerships and special arrangements.
A Brief History of Craftsman
The Craftsman brand boasts a long and storied history. Initially owned by Sears, Roebuck & Co. for nearly a century, it became synonymous with quality and durability, especially among homeowners and hobbyists. Sears’ dominance allowed Craftsman to thrive, making it a staple in garages and workshops across America. However, as Sears faced financial difficulties, the future of Craftsman was thrown into question.
The Acquisition by Stanley Black & Decker
In 2017, Stanley Black & Decker (SBD) acquired the Craftsman brand from Sears. This acquisition marked a significant shift in the brand’s distribution strategy and product offerings. SBD aimed to expand the Craftsman brand’s reach beyond Sears, leveraging its own extensive network of retailers and manufacturing capabilities.
Ace Hardware’s Relationship with Stanley Black & Decker
Ace Hardware, a cooperative of independent hardware retailers, already had a long-standing relationship with Stanley Black & Decker, carrying various SBD brands like DeWalt and Stanley. This existing partnership provided a foundation for Ace Hardware to potentially offer certain Craftsman products.
Where You Can Find Craftsman at Ace Hardware
While Ace Hardware stores may not have a dedicated Craftsman aisle like the brand used to enjoy at Sears, select Craftsman products are available for purchase through AceHardware.com. These offerings might include hand tools, tool storage solutions, and certain power tool accessories. The availability of specific Craftsman items can vary depending on location and online inventory.
Why the Limited Availability?
The limited availability boils down to a strategic decision by both Stanley Black & Decker and Ace Hardware. SBD distributes Craftsman through various channels, including Lowe’s, Amazon, and other retailers. This diversified approach avoids over-saturation and allows SBD to cater to different customer segments. Ace Hardware, with its focus on local service and a specific range of hardware and home improvement products, carefully curates its inventory to meet the needs of its customer base. The demand and logistical considerations also influence which Craftsman items end up on Ace shelves (or, more accurately, on their website).
