Cyberstates 2008: A
Complete State-by-State Overview of the
High-Technology Industry is AeA's 11th annual edition of
our Cyberstates report. The
148 page report offers
seven chapters and
43 pages of detailed appendices on national and state trends in tech employment, establishments,
wages, payroll, venture capital investments, and research and
development expenditures.
Two other
major AeA cyber reports are forthcoming that analyze the U.S. high-tech
industry: Cybercities 2008: An Overview of the High-Technology Industry
in the Nation’s Top 60 Cities, and Trade in the Cyberstates 2008: A
State-by-State Overview of High-Tech International Trade.

In discussing our top public policy priorities with Congress,

the data and analysis that brings credibility and understanding to our issues.
U.S. High-Tech
Employment Up in 2007
- U.S. high-tech employment totaled 5.9 million in 2007,
up by
91,400 jobs or 1.6 percent in 2007.
- Software services employment and engineering and tech
services employment both increased in 2007 for the fourth consecutive year, by
82,600 and 45,800 jobs, respectively.
- The High-tech manufacturing industry shed
29,800 jobs and the communications services industry shed 7,200 jobs in
2007.
Key Employment Findings by Cyberstate
- California, Texas, New York, Florida, and
Virginia led the nation in high-tech employment in 2006.
- Forty-eight cyberstates added tech jobs between 2005 and
2006. Only four cyberstates lost technology industry jobs.
- California pays its tech workers the highest wage -
$101,200 in 2006 - followed by Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and
Colorado.
- For the second
straight year, Virginia led the nation in concentration of high-tech
workers in 2006, with 91 high-tech workers per 1,000 private sector
workers.
