venture capital investments. Cyberstates 2003 also includes the latest data
on wages, establishments, payroll, and research and development expenditures, using AeA's
new definition of high tech based on the recently implemented North American Industry
Classification System (NAICS). |

- High-tech employment totaled 6 million in
2002, down from 6.5 million in 2001
- High-tech manufacturing declined by
233,000 jobs in 2002
- High-tech services employment declined by
306,500 jobs, dropping by:
- 145,500 in communication services
- 146,200 in software
- 14,800 in engineering and tech services
- Unemployment rates for computer programmers
jumped to 6.2 percent in 2002, up from 4.5 percent in 2001
- U.S. high-tech venture capital
declined by 52 percent in 2002
- Tech employment was down in all but
three states in 2002
- Florida jumped to fourth place by high-tech employment in 2002, moving up
from fifth place in 2001, displacing Massachusetts
