venture capital investments, and home computer and Internet use. Cyberstates 2002
also includes the latest data on wages, establishments, payroll, and research and
development expenditures. The report provides trends for each of these indicators
since 1995.

- High-tech employment totaled 5.6 million in 2001, up slightly from 5.5 million in 2000
- High-tech manufacturing declined by
65,000 jobs in 2001
- Unemployment rates for computer
programmers jumped to 3.7 percent in 2001, up from 1.7 percent in 2000
- U.S. electronics exports dropped 15
percent in 2001 to $189
billion
- U.S. high-tech venture capital
declined by 60 percent in 2001
- California remained the nation's
leading cyberstate with nearly 1 million tech workers
- Virginia jumped to 6th place by tech
employment in 2001, moving up from 9th place in 1995
- Kansas was the second fastest growing
tech state in 2001, adding 6,800 technology workers
- Venture capital investment declined
in all but four states in 2001
