Imation Honors Outstanding Product and Technology Contributions

Company Recognizes 20 Recipients of U.S. Patents; Bestows Inaugural 'Genesis Award' on 'T10000' Team for Industry-Leading Tape Product

OAKDALE, Minn., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN) today announced the recipients of its first-ever Genesis Award for a new product that has made a significant contribution to the company and an impact industry-wide. Imation also recognized 20 employees and retirees who have been named as inventors on the 25 of the 32 patents issued to Imation by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2007. Both groups were honored during the company's sixth annual Awards Banquet October 9, 2008.

Imation's 'T10000 Team' received the company's first Genesis Award for its successful development and introduction of the Sun StorageTek(TM) T10000 tape cartridge. This industry-leading magnetic data storage tape provides the highest data capacity per cartridge in the enterprise tape market -- a full terabyte of storage capacity on a single cartridge. The T10000 tape utilizes Imation's proprietary Tera Angstrom(TM) technology, a proprietary coating formulation and process enabling a terabyte-capacity tape product, with Imation's patented Precision-Tracking 'N Pattern' Servo writing technology, an ultra-precise reference pattern enabling nanometer-level tracking accuracy for one terabyte and more of data.

"Our T10000 program combines the best of our 50-year tape technology expertise with our deep understanding of advanced tape storage solutions that Imation's enterprise customers demand," said Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, vice president, Global Commercial Business, R&D and Manufacturing, Imation. "Our T10000 program is an example of executing all elements of product development and commercialization -- from invention through scale-up, commercialization, and technical service -- that enable our customers to maximize and protect their data storage investments. I'm very pleased to recognize the core team at Imation that helped successfully launch this important new tape format."

Imation also recognized 20 inventors for individual data storage-related patents received in 2007. Imation's highest patent honor, the Significant Patent Award, was awarded to Ronald Turchin for his "Magnetic Recording Diskette Having Reduced-Area Fabric Liner." The Significant Patent designation is awarded annually to an invention that has fundamentally and positively impacted Imation's products or manufacturing processes.

Turchin's patent covers the fabric lining inside a 3 1/2 inch diskette shell that cleans and protects the diskette from wear. Turchin discovered he could reduce the area of the liner by adding features to the inside of the diskette that would prevent the magnetic media from rubbing against the surface, creating manufacturing cost savings while maintaining uncompromising quality and longevity for the media.

"As leaders in data storage, audio and video electronics, and accessories, our technology and product development teams are among the best and brightest in the industry. We appreciate their ability to consistently generate ideas and create new products that positively impact our business and the industry as a whole," said Kulkarni. "As Imation expands its technology and product portfolio, the intellectual property, creative designs, and strong execution of our teams are integral to our success. We are pleased to honor this year's Genesis Award and patent recipients."
