It's the little things that get you
I have been in the professional workforce for approximately 22 years. Until last week I had never used a full sick day. What hospital do you send your get well cards too? What health catastrophe broke my streak? I had a sore throat!!! Although in my defense, it was not the usual throw a couple of cough drops down and suck it up soreness. I actually went to urgent care on Saturday and was entirely convinced they would find a previously unheard of exotic strain of bacteria ('I'm sorry Mr. Carroll but you have the Tegucicalpa strain, it will require massive amounts of antibiotics and you will only be able to eat ice cream the rest of your life'). Despite my insistence that my condition was life threatening, my doctor assured me otherwise. On the plus side, I am now a connoisseur of cough drops, I present to you my top 3 cough drops:

3rd Place, Halls Menthol Lyptus, the most soothing, but taste horrible.
2nd Place, Ludens Berry flavored, these are the best tasting but lack the 'oomph' of the Halls.
1st Place, A&W Root Beer Hard Candy, they are not specifically made for sore throats, but work better than any of the ones above.

My health crisis went away as fast as it came and my doctor assures me I will be able to lead a normal healthy life. As I was eating my first 'post sore throat' meal, a Big Mac, an argument broke out over my choice of diet. Mrs. Carroll promptly ended this debate by assuring me that 'sore throat crisis' is nothing compared to the 'big mac' induced heart attack that surely would be coming my way.

On to the important stuff.......

Around Town - Indyme
Ever wonder what happens when you go to Target and pick up one of those red
phones or press one of those help buttons at Lowes? Indyme, a San Diego company, produces retail customer service hardware and software that tracks response times and other statistics revolving around customer service. Indyme has been in San Diego...well, forever... and has plaques that are full of employee names commemorating 5, 10, and 15 years of service!!! Steve Deal is the CEO and recently took me on a tour of his Kearny Mesa facilities. Indyme is bucking the outsourcing trend by doing most of the real work onsite, including light manufacturing. I was really struck by the amount of centralized data Indyme collects on behalf of its retail clients. Steve, like many AeA members is becoming more involved in AeA advocacy efforts to educate lawmakers about the real world impact of onerous gov't regulations and taxes. You can find out more about Indyme by visiting their website at www.indyme.com.
