August 9, 2007:  AeA Releases Special U.S. Congressional Report: The 21st Century Competitiveness Act Passes Congress

On August 2, the U.S. Congress passed The 21st Century Competitiveness Act by a resounding margin and on August 9 President Bush signed it into law. After the signing, President Bush asserted that, “the bill I signed today will help ensure that we remain the most competitive and innovative nation in the world.”

When Nancy Pelosi visited AeA shortly after the November mid-term elections, she stated that the she did not just want 230 votes, but wanted at least 350 to make competitiveness a real bipartisan mandate. It passed the House with 367 votes. AeA praises the Speaker’s efforts in exceeding her own expectations and thanks the Senate for passing the bill by a unanimous voice vote...read more.

June 2007

June 19, 2007:   AeA releases a new Competitiveness Series report on how U.S.-South Korea Free Trade Agreement Will Improve Access for U.S. High Tech.

June 13, 2007:   AeA report calls for enacting Free Trade Agreements with Colombia, Panama, and Peru.

June 6, 2007:    AeA’s Board of Directors return to Washington, DC, for the annual
congressional fly-in.  The Board meets with over 30 U.S. Senators, Representatives, and their staff.

March 13, 2007:  The American Innovation Proclamation was unveiled at a press conference with 270+ leading corporations, universities, and industry groups signing.  The proclamation asks the U.S. Congress to:

  • Improve Student Achievement in Math and Science;
  • Renew America's Commitment to Government Funded Basic Research;
  • Welcome Highly Educated Foreign Professionals; and
  • Make Permanent a Strengthened R&D Tax Credit.

AeA Board of Directors Selects Competitiveness as Top Public Policy Priority for 2007

January 30, 2007:  At the winter meeting of the AeA Board of Director announced the
Public Policy Priorities for 2007.  For Competitiveness, the board came to a consensus to:

- Improve science, technology, engineering, & mathematics (STEM) education at all levels
- Increase federal funding for basic research, specifically for physical sciences, engineering, and math and computer science research
- Reform the U.S. high skilled visa and green card system

Tell Congress to Act Quickly on Competitiveness
January 1, 2007: 
Join us and over 200 leading corporations, universities, and industry groups in signing AeA's American Innovation Proclamation in calling on Congress to take action on Competitiveness.  The proclamation asks Congress to:

  • Improve Student Achievement in Math and Science;
  • Renew America's Commitment to Government Funded Basic Research;
  • Welcome Highly Educated Foreign Professionals; and

On November 15, 2005, then House Minority Leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other Democrats released "The Innovation Agenda:  A Commitment to Competitiveness to Keep America #1" at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
