AeA International Environmental Policies and Initiatives


Europe

AeA works closely with the AeA Europe Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Committee to ensure that environmental policies in the European Union (EU) do not serve as unfair or unnecessary trade barriers.  The EU is the U.S. high-tech industry's largest export market and top manufacturing investment destination, and EU regulatory policies can significantly affect the competitiveness of U.S. products and services is that important market.

AeA and AeA Europe are working actively with EU policymakers on the the development and/or implementation of the following key environmental issues:

From November 9-11, 2004, AeA Director for International Trade Policy, Becky Linder, led a delegation of U.S. Member Company representatives to Brussels, Belgium to discuss the continuous onslaught of European environmental regulations targeting the high-tech sector with European officials, Brussels-based Member Company representatives, and other key stakeholders.  For more information visit: www.aeanet.org/brussels2004

From February 19-26, 2004, AeA went on a roadshow with two key officials from the U.K. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to educate high-tech companies on two new environmental laws in the European Union.  Read what happened in New Jersey, Washington, Chicago, and Silicon Valley.

From May 20-23, 2003, a delegation of AeA member-company representatives traveled to Brussels, Belgium to coordinate with the AeA Europe EHS Committee and to lobby EU policymakers on environmental policy matters.  For more information about this annual AeA trip, contact:

China

On November 10 and 11, 2003, AeA organized a successful event with experts from 14 high-tech companies and Chinese Government officials to discuss Lead-Free Electronics Technologies and Electronics Recycling.  See the event recap and presentations!

The Chinese Government has issued a draft regulation, based on the EU RoHS Directive, entitled, Management Methods for the Prevention and Control of Pollution from Production of Electronic Information Products (a.k.a. "China RoHS).

AeA is working with our shared office in Beijing to educate the Chinese Government about the need for harmonization between the EU and Chinese regulations on hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
