Undergraduate Degrees
Trends in Scientific/Mathematical Fields
In undergraduate fields of study that rely on a solid
background in math and science education, the degree trends are negative.
Since 1985, the number of undergraduate degrees issued in computer
science, engineering, engineering technology and physics has declined –
by 8% in computer science; by 24% in engineering; by 26% in engineering
technology; by 24% in mathematics; and by 18% in physics. Only computer
science degrees have rebounded since their low of 24,000 degrees in 1996.
Most of the growth in computer science degrees occurred in 2000. It is no
clear whether the increase in computer science degrees is temporary or a
permanent trend.
