Math/Science Partnership Overview

Math and Science Teaching Needs

  • Nationwide, 28% of math teachers and 18% of science teachers in grades 9-12 do not have a major or minor in math or science.
  • 2.4 million new teachers will be needed between 1998 and 2008
  • The "No Child Left Behind" Act requires all teachers are "fully qualified" by the end of the 2005-2006 school year. This means:
    • Public elementary and secondary schoolteachers must be fully licensed or certified by the state.
    • New public school teachers must have a bachelor’s degree and pass a state test demonstrating subject knowledge in reading, writing, and mathematics.
    • New middle and high school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree and demonstrate competency in each of the academic subjects taught.
    • Current teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree and pass an objective state evaluation demonstrating proficiency in subjects they.
  • The Math/Science Partnership Program can be used to help high need local school districts come into compliance with the requirements of the "No Child Left Behind" Act
