Math/Science Partnership Working Group

Meeting Notes

March 25, 2002

 

1. Lobbying Strategy: Our strategy is to visit with key appropriators and members of the authorizing committees and ask that funding for the Math/Science Partnership be an item they request the House/Senate Labor/HHS Committees fund. Our target is to visit will all key members of the House and Senate by May 1.

2. Hill Visits: The Working Group took assignments for meetings with House/Senate Labor/HHS Committee members and key members of authorizing committees.

3. Scheduled Hill visits: The following meetings have been scheduled on Capitol Hill -

Wednesday, March 27
3:00 p.m.: Meet with John Tustin , Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson , 1511 Longworth

EBJ chairs the CBC and is on the Science Committee

Thursday, March 28
10:00 a.m.: Meet with Dale Lewis, Rep. Steny Hoyer, 1705 Longworth

Monday, April 1
2:00 p.m.: Meet with Rebecca Litt, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, 709 Hart

Thursday, April 11
4:00 p.m.: Meet with Sheryl Smith, House Appropriations Committee Minority Staff, 1001 Longworth

Tuesday, April 16
10:00 a.m.: Meet with Betty Lou Taylor, Senate Appropriations Committee Minority Staff, 188 Dirksen

4. Outreach: The committee discussed outreach to other groups interested in this issue and agreed to contact several groups to see if there are shared interests.

5. Letter to the appropriators: A draft letter written by Paula Collins of Texas Instruments was circulated. Working Group members are asked to provide any edits/improvements by COB Friday, March 29. Once the final draft is agreed upon, the letter will be circulated to all working group members for signature. The group would like to send the letter on Monday, April 8, to all House/Senate appropriators.

6. Issue papers were approved for use by the Working Group.
