About the Medal of Achievement Dinner

The Medal of Achievement Dinner will be an exclusive and elegant event held at the beautiful San Jose Fairmont Hotel, and attended by high-level politicians and significant industry leaders. It is the high-tech "who's who" gala of the year.

Since 1959, the Medal of Achievement has been presented annually for significant contributions to the advancement of the high-tech industry and for distinguished service to the community, the industry and humankind. AeA is proud to announce that Richard M. Levy, Ph.D., Chairman, President, and CEO of Varian Medical Systems, will receive its 2004 Medal of Achievement Award. Mr. Levy joins a select group of high-tech leaders who have received the honor, including William Hewlett and David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, Ross Perot of Electronic Data Systems, Thomas J. Watson, Jr. of IBM, and Gordon Moore and Andrew Grove of Intel.

Mr. Levy will be the fiftieth recipient of the coveted award, which will be presented at AeA’s annual dinner to be held October 7th at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California. The AeA Medal of Achievement is presented annually to recognize an individual who makes significant contributions to the advancement and service of their community, the high-tech industry, and humankind. It is the highest award presented by AeA.

Medal of Achievement Recipient: Richard M. Levy

Levy photoCreated in 1999 when Varian Associates, Inc., a company Levy joined in 1968, was divided into three separate companies, Varian Medical Systems provides high energy radiation machines and associated hardware and software for treating cancer, and x-ray tubes for imaging in medical, scientific, and industrial applications. With over 3,500 radiotherapy systems in place delivering treatments to more than one million cancer patients per year, including over 50% of all cancer patients in the U.S., the company holds a clear leadership position in this technology. Varian Medical Systems also ranks as the world’s largest merchant supplier of X-ray tubes, including products for use in CT scanners, mammography units, and other diagnostic systems.

“This is the first time AeA has recognized someone from the medical technology sector of high-tech, and it is a great privilege to honor Dick Levy and his contributions to this industry,” said William T. Archey, President and CEO of AeA. “AeA’s Medal of Achievement honors dynamic, concerned leadership at the company level, and in the industry, the community, and the nation. Dick Levy exemplifies this, and AeA and the high-tech industry salute you.”

Mr. Levy holds a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a doctorate in nuclear chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. During his tenure at Varian, Mr. Levy served as senior vice president from 1989 to 1992 and executive vice president until 1999, when Varian Medical Systems was formed and he was named CEO.

Mr. Levy is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and the Boards of Directors of Pharmacyclics, Inc., and the California Healthcare Institute. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Electronics Association, and he served on the Board of Directors of the Diagnostic Imaging and Therapy Systems Division of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.
