Research in Motion Chairman &
Co-CEO Keynotes AeA Annual Dinner

June 7, 2006: James L. Balsillie,
Chairman and Co-CEO,
Research In Motion (RIM),
led a list of technology company executives and managers who came together
to network and thank their public sector counterparts at the sold out AeA
Annual Technology for Government (T4G) Dinner.
Hosted by the
AeA Board
of Directors, this annual dinner brought together more than 550 tech
leaders in Washington, DC. Attendees included numerous U.S. Government
Chief Information Officers, Chief Technology Officers, and procurement
officials from more than 30 Federal military and civilian agencies.
Additionally AeA, welcomed officials and leadership from the
Administration, Congress, Foreign Ambassadors, Foreign Trade Ministers,
and dozens of CEOs representing high-tech companies.
Mr. Balsillie’s keynote address praised the U.S. government CIOs for their
leadership in adopting innovative technologies. He discussed the history
of the Blackberry and how advancements in wireless communications have
changed the business community, but the scope of this and other emerging
technologies has hardly scratched the surface.
A reception was held prior to the dinner, where AeA members met with
leading officials of the Federal government and Congress, including
Scott Charbo, CIO, Dept. of Homeland Security; Charlie Armstrong,
Deputy CIO, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security; Vernon M. Bettencourt,
Jr., Deputy CIO, U.S. Dept. of the Army; Vance Hitch, CIO, U.S.
Dept. of State; Dr. Robert Kolodner, Chief Health Information
Officer, Veterans Health Administration; Patrick Pizzella, CIO,
U.S. Dept. of Labor, Tim Schmidt, CTO, U.S. Dept. of
Transportation; Jim Van Derhoff, CIO, U.S. Dept. of State; Jerry
Williams, CIO, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture; and Robert Burton,
Associate Administrator, Procurement, Office of Management and Budget
(OMB), the Executive Office of the President.
Earlier in the day, the AeA Board of Directors split into nine teams and
held over 40 lobby visits with key members of Congress and visited the
White House to discuss U.S. Competitiveness issues. The entire Board was
also briefed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House
Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), House
Subcommittee on Capital Markets Chairman Richard Baker (R-LA), and
House Subcommittee on Appropriations for Science Chairman Frank Wolfe
(R-VA).

Jim Balsillie is
Chairman and Co-CEO at Research
In Motion. He is responsible for directing RIM's strategy,
business development and finance.
In 2002, Jim founded The Centre for
International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a world-class global
research institute focused on the restructuring of international
governance, with particular emphasis on financial and economic
institutions.
Jim is a Graduate of
the University of Toronto and the Harvard School of Business. He
is a Chartered Accountant and elected as a Fellow of the Ontario
Institute of Chartered Accountants. Jim also holds a Doctorate Degree
from Wilfrid Laurier University.
