Improving Your Company's ROI in AeA -- A Potential Merger with ITAA

Earlier this month, I sent you a message with Deirdre Hanford, the Association's Chairman of the Board, that AeA and the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) have begun discussions toward a potential merger.  As Phil Bond, ITAA's President & CEO, and I believe -- a combined association would enable us to better represent you by creating THE national technology association, unrivaled in size, service, and clout.

My staff and I have spoken with many of you already and we're excited about your enthusiasm about the two associations joining forces to present a strengthened organization where the sum is larger than each of its separate parts.  AeA's mission is to work with our small-, medium-, and large-members to help your top line and bottom line.  ITAA and AeA's complementary programs and services will offer both of our organizations the ability to offer our companies a better ROI.

AeA's Board of Directors will be meeting in San Jose from October 14-16 to continue to discuss this potential opportunity.  ITAA's Board will be meeting shortly after.  Once the Boards make their decisions, we will follow-up with you again to conduct a full membership vote.

As a member-driven organization, we want to assure as our first priority that this proposed merger is in your company's interest.  So you can learn more about ITAA, I have provided additional information on ITAA below or you can download a fact-sheet about the combined benefits at www.aeanet.org/ITAAmerger

Sincerely,

Christopher Hansen
President and CEO
AeA, Advancing the Business of Technology

ITAA’s approximately 350 members span the industry spectrum from systems integration and Internet to telecommunications, software, and hardware.  Its commercial sector group offers networking and business development opportunities along with policy advocacy and market and business intelligence.  Its public sector group promotes technology-enabled government and procurement at the federal, state, and local levels for government IT solutions providers.  A recent ITAA merger with the Government Electronics and Information Technology Association (GEIA) provides members with standards development opportunities and government market forecasting information.  If you wish to learn more about ITAA, please visit their website at www.itaa.org.

AeA Asks Congress to Act Expeditiously to Stabilize
U.S. Financial Markets

AeA issued the following statement to national media on September 25 attributed to Christopher W. Hansen, President and CEO, AeA, in light of the current financial market crisis.

“There are moments in history that transcend jurisdictions and politics. We are now living in one of those moments.

“The lessons learned from our current financial failure must be analyzed thoroughly so that the sources of the problems are understood and not repeated. This analysis will take time. In the meantime, we must pass legislation that will stabilize our financial markets. We can’t compound the errors that led to this crisis by committing the error of inaction.

“Congress needs to act swiftly and surely to pass legislation that will deal with the current crisis. We strongly urge Congress to work in a bipartisan manner with the Administration to help alleviate the current crisis before our financial system fails to function. The damage that could be caused by inaction is incalculable.”

New U.S. Ambassador to EU is Keynote Speaker at AeA Europe Annual All-Member Meeting

On September 16, AeA Europe held its annual All-Member meeting in Brussels and had the honor of having the new U.S. Ambassador to the EU, Kristen Silverberg, serve as the keynote speaker.  The Ambassador acknowledged the critical role AeA Europe has played in representing the interests of the U.S. high-tech industry in Brussels and committed to supporting our continued efforts especially in the areas of energy efficiency and environmental regulations.

Over 40 company representatives attended the all day program that discussed and set key policy priorities for the coming year which included:

  • positioning the high-tech industry as part of the solution for sustainable development,
  • working towards global standards and conformity assessment processes, and
  • ensuring an open accessible market to best available technology regardless of origin.

Members heard from key European officials during the discussions of priorities for each of its three committees:

  • Bjorn Hansen, Deputy Head of Chemicals Unit, Environment DG;
  • Jacques McMillan, Head of Unit, Enterprise DG; and
  • Alexander Alvaro, Member of European Parliament (Germany).

Once again the annual satisfaction survey showed strong support for the work of AeA Europe as 100 percent of the respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with the overall performance of the organization.  If your company is interested in joining AeA Europe or wants to learn more about its work in Brussels, please contact James Lovegrove at james_lovegrove@aeanet.org.

Senior Policy Advisor to McCain Speaks at AeA

AeA continued its outreach to the presidential candidates by hosting a technology and innovation discussion with the Senior Policy Advisor to the Campaign of Sen. John McCain on September 19. Executives from the high-tech industry, U.S. universities, and technology professional societies filled AeA’s David Packard Conference Center for the briefing from Ike Brannon, a former U.S. Treasury official and professor of economics from the University of Wisconsin. The briefing was also hosted by the Task Force on the Future of American Innovation, which is co-chaired by AeA and the Intel Corporation.

Mr. Brannon stressed Sen. McCain’s ongoing support for technology and innovation and discussed the campaign’s key policy focus, including:

  • Developing and enhancing a tax structure that will reward and encourage research and innovation;
  • Improving the math and science education of the American workforce by fully funding the America Competes Act and investing in community colleges;
  • Protecting intellectual property;
  • Expanding broadband access;
  • Appointing a National Science Advisor early in a new Administration; and
  • Enhancing and making permanent the R&D tax credit.

Mr. Brannon fielded a variety of questions on how and when Sen. McCain planned to achieve his stated goals given budget constraints and his desire to balance the budget by the end of his first term.

More on Sen. McCain’s Technology Agenda.

Protecting Your Business Interests in all 50 States

Last year nearly 157,000 bills were introduced in state legislatures across the U.S. and any number of them could have had a direct impact on your bottom line -- either positively or negatively.

Now as most states' 2008 legislative sessions have adjourned and before the 2009 sessions kick off (which we expect to be very active) several of you have asked us to compile a comprehensive end-of-session report to highlight issues that AeA's expanded State Government Affairs (SGA) program has worked in protecting members' ability to do business.  We answered.

SGA's regional policy and issue managers have written their recaps and we're expecting to have it finalized and available for you all at www.aeanet.org/SGA in the coming weeks.  Issues that will be highlighted include:

  • Child Online Safety

  • Competitiveness

  • E-Commerce and Online Safety

  • Education

  • Environment

  • Government Market

  • Healthcare

  • HR/Workforce

  • Intellectual Property

  • Outsourcing

  • RFID

  • Sales

  • Taxation

  • Telecom/Broadband

The successes of this year could not have been possible without the strong leadership provided by our member driven program, which was chaired in 2008 by Jim Wall, Regional Government Affairs Director, Microsoft.  We thank him for his valued contributions and would like to announce SGA's new 2009 leadership:

  • Chairman
    Monica Mueller, Manager, State Government Affairs, Motorola

  • Vice-Chairman
    Mike Foulkes, Senior Manager, State and Local Governments, Apple

Monica and Mike will be leading our efforts this year and hosting AeA's Biannual State Government Affairs (SGA) Meeting on January 26-27 in San Francisco.  I hope that you can join us to help shape the SGA program as we move forward.
