Josh James is the Senior Manager of Research and
Industry Analysis at AeA. Based in the association's Washington, DC office, Josh
co-authors the organization's annual flagship publication,
Cyberstates,
a comprehensive analysis of the status of the U.S. high-tech industry.
Over the past three years Josh has immersed himself
in the issue of U.S. competitiveness. He co-authored AeA's 2005 groundbreaking
report, Losing the Competitive Advantage?,
and its 2007 sequel,
We Are Still Losing
the Competitive Advantage. One Member of Congress stated:
"These reports were "the catalyst that woke up those of us in
the public policy sphere to the competitiveness challenges facing America."
This original report led to AeA's
ongoing Competitiveness Series that analyzes important tech issues, using
rigorous data collection with narrative analysis to make these issues
understandable to policymakers, business leaders, and the media. In this
series Josh has tackled such issues as RFID, high-skilled visa reform, high-tech
trade patterns, eHealth, network neutrality, telework, and the rise of China. Josh tracks the pulse of the tech
industry, regularly talking with AeA members, policymakers, researchers, and
the press.
Josh has been with AeA since October 2004. Prior to
his time at AeA, Josh worked on a variety of research projects in both the
public and private sectors in Washington, DC, including the National
Telecommunication and Information Administration at the U.S. Department of
Commerce. Prior to that, Josh worked for several years in the non-profit
sector in Chicago.
Josh was born and raised in
Sioux City, Iowa. He holds dual masters degrees in International
Communications and Business Administration from American University in
Washington, DC and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of
Notre Dame. Josh also studied at the Institute of European Studies in
Vienna, Austria and taught English in Valparaiso, Chile for six months.
