AeA, ITAA Announce Merger Discussions

Merger Would Bring Together Technology Industry's Leading Trade Associations, Enhancing Product Offerings and Services for Members

Washington, DC and Arlington, VA (September 11, 2008) - The Boards of Directors of AeA (formerly the American Electronics Association) and the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) have announced that they are in discussions to merge the trade associations' memberships and programs. A combination of the nation’s two leading technology associations would give rise to a stronger voice for the technology industry by bringing together the largest number of tech companies in the country, and combining the two associations' highly complementary offerings.

"Together we would be the national technology association, unrivaled in size and clout," said ITAA Chairman Hank Steininger, a managing partner at Grant Thornton. "Our goal is a merger of equals that strengthens the industry by continuing the association consolidation we began in January. With a new Administration and Congress on the horizon in Washington, it's critical for the industry to present a united front."

"Convergence, consolidation, and the change brewing in Washington require us to speak with a louder, clearer voice," said AeA Chairperson Deirdre Hanford, Senior Vice President, Global Technical Services, Synopsys, Inc. "Our member companies compete in a global marketplace. In the states, in Washington, and around the world, this merger would allow the U.S. technology industry to further strengthen its partnerships with government for the continued advancement of technology."

AeA and ITAA believe that combining forces would provide members - the majority of industry leaders in all segments of the technology industry - an even greater value with additional benefits and services to further represent interests and improve business on multiple fronts. Members of both associations would benefit from access to a wider variety of government and commercial programs including unprecedented capabilities in lobbying, business and capital development, business services, elite networking, market forecasting, standards development, and research.

"This combination would augment AeA’s market-leading position in commercial programs with ITAA’s commercial public policy team and programs," said ITAA Vice Chairman Gene Glazar, Vice President, Business Development for BAE Systems. "ITAA’s leadership in government market forecasting, standards, and procurement policy would round out a leading lineup across all markets."

“ITAA’s robust public sector offerings would make a perfect fit for our programs in the government marketplace, and it offers signature commercial programs that would bolster our leadership there,” said AeA Vice Chairman Peter J. Boni, President and Chief Executive Officer, Safeguard Scientifics, Inc.

The resulting organization would have offices across the United States, and in Beijing and Brussels. AeA’s network of regional councils combined with ITAA’s alliances with over 40 regional associations through the Technology Councils of North America and ITAA’s membership in the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) – a network of 69 technology associations in countries around the world - would complete a robust, grassroots-to-global presence for the technology industry at large.
