Washington, DC (March 8, 2006) - AeA, the
nation’s largest trade association representing all segments of the high-tech
industry, today released a new report on the impact of trade between the United
States and Peru. The report, "Free Trade Peru," finds that high-tech goods
exports to Peru totaled $428 million in 2005, up 10 percent from the previous
year.
"While Peru might be a small market for U.S. high-tech products, we have a
significant tech trade surplus with Peru," said Rob Mulligan, AeA's Senior Vice
President International. "Bilateral trade agreements such as the U.S. Peru Trade
Agreement help strengthen ties between countries and foster free markets and
democracy in a region that is struggling with both."
"As part of the free trade pact, Peru has also agreed to sign the WTO's
Information Technology Agreement, which removes tariff and non-tariff barriers
to technology products," said Mulligan. "Ultimately, this helps create American
jobs as it opens the Peruvian marketplace to U.S. products and services."
The report released today is part of AeA's ongoing Competitiveness Series, which
analyzes issues of importance to the high-tech industry.
