Washington, DC (February 5, 2007) – For the
past two years, AeA’s highest priority has been improving the competitiveness of
American high tech. One of the elements is to increase the basic research budget
of the Federal government. AeA strongly praises the efforts of Speaker Nancy
Pelosi, Representative Dave Obey, Chairman of the House Appropriations
Committee, and others, for increasing the budget, specifically for physical
sciences, in the continuing resolutions for fiscal year 2007.
“Speaker Pelosi has been consistently supportive of efforts to improve American
competitiveness,” said William T. Archey, President and CEO, AeA. "This was
vividly demonstrated in the Democrat's Innovation Agenda introduced in the 109th
Congress. This action on the R&D budget further reinforces that commitment."
Speaker Pelosi recently announced the passing of H.J.Res.20, which makes
continuing appropriations for the remainder of the fiscal year 2007. The bill,
which stays within the budget limits set by Congress last year, makes critical
investments for several unmet needs, and passed on the House floor by a strong
bipartisan vote of 286 to 140.
This is a very important step towards improving America’s competitiveness, and
it is now up to the Senate to follow through.
