AeA Oregon Council
Launches Corporate Governance Series
Increased scrutiny of corporate leadership makes service on a board of directors more challenging than ever. The AeA Oregon Council is launching a new series of programs to help corporate boards meet the challenges.
Billed as “Good Governance Matters,” the set of four programs, which began March
18, 2008, focuses on best practices for directors of public and private companies. Directors, CEOs, CFOs, corporate secretaries, and in-house counsels are eligible and all will benefit.
At the first event, Denise Amantea, senior vice-president at Woodruff-Sawyer & Co., spoke
about the changing roles and responsibilities of the board. She
led a panel discussion that included Bill Lattin and Duane McDougall, who each serve on a number of local
boards and Rick Wills, chairman of Tektronix Inc. This event was
sponsored by The Brentwood Group, KPMG LLP, and Stoel Rives
LLP.
Three more events have been scheduled this year. Topics include: “The Governance of Corporate Strategy” (April 29), “Best Practices for Boards in Executive Compensation” (May
20) and “What Part Does the Board Play in Executive Succession Planning?” (June 17). Each three-hour breakfast event will give seasoned professionals the opportunity to hear from and discuss topics with expert panelists,
earn RiskMetrics Group Institution of Shareholder Services
(ISS) credits and enhance board success.
Cost for each event is $100 for AeA members; $150 for non-members.
The next event takes place Tuesday, April 29, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Oregon Zoo Skyline Banquet Room.
Thanks to our sponsor Stoel Rives LLP.

AeA
Ramps Up Commitment to State Lobbying
AeA’s new president and CEO Chris Hansen has announced an even stronger commitment by AeA to monitor and influence legislation at the state level. While AeA will continue to work on federal legislation, the association will build its capacity in the states, where a lot of legislative activity impacting high-tech happens.
“Our members asked us to create a more structured and integrated system of representation throughout the states to assure consistency and effectiveness. We listened to them,” said Hansen. Roxanne Gould from the AeA Sacramento public policy office will oversee and manage the efforts in all 50 states.
AeA will focus heavily on issues surrounding environmental policy, RFID and emerging technologies, education and workforce development, procurement, tax and fiscal issues, e-commerce, and general business and state-specific legislation.
Visit the AeA website for more
information.

Meanwhile Back in Washington,
DC
While AeA increases its lobbying focus on the states, federal policy remains an important part of our work. Each year, the AeA national board of directors sets policy priorities for the year. At its recent meeting, it set the following priorities:
-
Competitiveness (visa reforms and science and technology
education)
-
E-Commerce (online safety, data security, and
privacy)
-
Health care Reform (deploying health IT
systems)
-
International Issues (export controls, customs, trade agreements, international environmental
regulations)
-
Tax (R&D tax credit and general tax reform).

ONAMI Hosts Rollout of New Federal
Funding Effort
Our good friend Skip Rung, who heads up Oregon’s nanotech institute ONAMI, invites you to attend an information session March 26 about a new federal research grant program targeted at jumpstarting new technologies.
The Technology Innovation Program (TIP) will support grants to small and medium-sized businesses to accelerate innovation in high-risk, high-reward technologies. Grants will be multi-year and can range up to $9 million. TIP director Marc Stanley will be on hand to explain the new program and answer questions. The grant competition will be announced in May/June with funds provided this year.
(TIP basically replaces the Advanced Technology Program or ATP and is run by the same federal organization – the National Institute of Standards and Technology.)
The event will be held in Portland at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and begins at 9 a.m.. Admission is free, but you need to RSVP to Skip Rung at
skip@onami.us.
Visit the ONAMI website for more
information.
