AeA regroups in summer months
Our frantic pace of regular networking events slows down
between June and September as we focus on a couple of large-scale projects
and regroup for the fall. There are no morning breakfast networking events
planned during the summer and no CXO networking forums. We sincerely thank
all of the volunteer organizers and all of the attendees who helped make
this year’s events a huge success.
During the summer we will focus on the annual Party in the Pinot set for
Saturday, July 29, at Oswego Hills Winery. Very few tables or individual
tickets remain. Call the AeA office right away if you still want to attend
at 503-624-6050.

CEO summit on tap for June 22
Every summer, the AeA Oregon Council holds its CEO Summit, a chance for
leaders of our member companies to get together to review progress during
the year and set plans for the coming year. This year’s summit will be
Thursday, June 22, from 1 to 5:15 p.m. followed by a reception from 5:15
to 6:30 p.m. in downtown Portland. CEOs will review
the state of the industry, discuss local programs, and set the public
policy agenda for next year. If you are the CEO of an AeA Oregon member
company and wish to attend, please call the AeA office immediately at
503-624-6050

AeA scholarships assist
14 Oregon students
A total of 14 recent Oregon high school graduates from
across the state are this year’s recipients of the AeA Technology
Scholarship that will enable them to attend Oregon public universities,
receive one-on-one mentoring from industry professionals, and compete for
the opportunity of a summer internship.
This year’s sponsoring companies include Intel Corp., Clarity Visual
Systems, and Timbercon Inc. Scholars are at the top of their graduating
classes with an average GPA of 3.94. Six of the 14 scholars are women.
The graduates are from cities across Oregon, including Albany, Beaverton,
Corvallis, Grants Pass, Newberg, Newport, Philomath, Salem, Sweet Home,
and Veneta. Their intended majors include computer science, physics,
chemistry, and chemical, computer, electrical, industrial and mechanical
engineering.
Intel launched the program in 1999 and it was adopted as an AeA program
the following year. Jennifer Bosze, AeA Oregon Council executive director,
said the program “is a great benefit to many talented Oregon students as
well as the companies involved.”
Corporate tax
disclosure measure withdrawn
A proposed ballot measure that would require many Oregon companies to
publicly disclose their state corporate taxes to the public record has
been withdrawn by its principal sponsor. The statewide teachers’ union
(Oregon Education Association) was collecting signatures on the measure
with the stated intent of using corporate disclosure to push for higher
business taxes in the future. In their minds, the public and the
Legislature would demand higher business taxes once they knew what
companies were actually paying.
In early June, however, the teachers’ group decided not to pursue the
measure, after having collected more than 80,000 signatures. Stated reason
was that the group needed to focus its resources on defeating two
potentially damaging measures that would enact a state spending limit and
expand taxpayer deductions. The OEA hopes the decision to withdraw the
disclosure measure will encourage the business community to join the fight
against the measures that would decrease public funds for schools and
other state priorities.
