In April 2003, AeA and Allen & Overy
published a report entitled, Rising
Environmental Stakes in Europe, which explains the new European
e-waste laws and how they affect your high-tech company.
Background: Passage
of the European Union (EU) Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the Restrictions
on the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (RoHS) Directive has resulted
in the most far-reaching environmental policy requirements for high-tech
products established by any government in
the world. It is clear that European
environmental policy is setting a pattern for the rest of the world. Since
the passage of the European Directives,
there are 39 e-waste bills pending in 11 U.S. states. There are also
similar laws planned in China, along
with industry-led voluntary initiatives in Japan. AeA and Allen &
Overy have been tracking the development of these two new Directives
since 1994, on behalf of their member
companies and clients, respectively.
Allen & Overy is a premier
international law firm with over 2,300
lawyers. It advises some of the world’s largest high-tech companies
through its offices in New York, the EU, and
Asia. See the Allen
& Overy Brochure and a description of the Allen
& Overy Environmental Law Group.
