China: An On the Ground Perspective
Introducing
Gregory Shea, President USITO
November 17, 2005
Mr. Shea began his talk with a brief historical positioning of China and how these historical
periods continue to influence thinking in China today. He went on to
introduce the new key operative word in
China, “Informatization”, which we will not find in a US dictionary, as
it is an English translation of a Chinese word. Informatization is key to
the State Council of China’s Five Year Plan. Informatization is based on
diversity in the areas of (1) Innovation, (2) Competitiveness (3)
Convergence and (4) Sustainability. The Chinese feel the
United States Information Technology Industry plays a vital role in Informatization, not only from an innovation point of view but also to
help sustain and grow China’s current political balance in their growing
role on the global stage.
Mr. Shea pointed to AeA’s
leadership role on the issue of Competitiveness and is having
conversations about publishing AeA’s
Competitiveness Whitepaper
in at least 2 Chinese dialects. In conclusion, he
encouraged all business leaders to read AeA’s
Competitiveness Whitepaper and referred to Thomas Friedman’s book, The
World is Flat, to encourage all of us as global citizens to come together
and get involved early. Optimism, which is fundamental to the future of
today’s world, is founded in the strength of sustained constructive
engagements that are filled with mutual respect.
