101 Execs Hit the Books  - Meet the Class of 2004

From August 8th to August 18th, 101 business executives from around the world explored a mountain of case studies, books and articles on technology business management at the 2004 Institute!

From morning till night the richly diverse class discussed current business management and technology issues, attending engaging class sessions on strategic leadership, marketing, operations, finance, accounting, company culture, and innovation. After class, participants met in work groups and New Venture Lab teams to study critical technology business cases and work on entrepreneurial projects.

Combining experience and lessons from class thirteen New Venture Lab teams raced to identify a potential product, or service, and build a corresponding business plan to present to a panel of professional venture capitalists.  InfoMedica (pictured below), with their plan for an implantable nano-sensor device that provides continuous remote monitoring of diabetic patients, won the Panel's Choice Award and tied for the People's Choice Award!

HP and National Semiconductor Honored

Since the launch of AeA's Stanford Executive Institute in 1975, Hewlett-Packard and National Semiconductor have sponsored a collective 185 top executives to participate. In recognition of this accomplishment, last spring AeA and Stanford University honored both organizations for their outstanding commitment to executive education.  In their acceptance speeches, representatives from HP and National Semiconductor praised the Institute's faculty, targeted curriculum, unique group dynamic, and commitment to excellence.

Daisy Ng, Vice President of Workforce Development and Organizational Effectiveness at HP, reflected on the 101 executives they've sent to the Institute noting that the program provides a unique cross industry exposure, focused coursework, and high level networking opportunity which expertly compliments HP's in-house executive education offerings and dramatically helps their executives achieve business objectives.
Edward Sweeney, Vice President of Human Resources at National Semiconductor shared the positive impact the Institute has had on their organization and read glowing testimonials from a few of their 84 alumni!  Ed noted that National Semiconductor will send many executives this year and thanked AeA and Stanford University for offering such a highly valuable program!
Both companies sent 6 of their top executives to the 2004 Institute!

Offshore Outsourcing - Special Report!

Download your free copy today!
Visit www.aeanet.org/publications for other publications and policy updates.

As a new addition to the Institute's CEO speaker series, AeA President & CEO, Bill Archey shared high tech's historical and recent involvement in public policy with 2004 attendees. Providing updates on Sarbanes-Oxley, Stock Option Expensing, National Security, and Offshore Outsourcing, prompted requests for copies of AeA's policy related publications.

Topping the request list is AeA's recent release "Offshore Outsourcing in an Increasingly Competitive and Rapidly Changing World" which has provided policy makers with data and analysis showing that many countries have caught up with the United States' technology industry.

"Today's world is increasingly more competitive...many of the companies that outsource jobs overseas usually have no alternative as that is exactly what their competitors are doing. Failure to do so will result in an even greater loss of jobs than would be lost to offshoring alone," said William T. Archey, President and CEO, AeA.

"We believe that public policy officials at all levels, executives, and employees need to understand this rapidly changing and intensely competitive new world. In addition to providing an analysis of both offshore outsourcing and the context in which it is occurring, AeA includes a list of recommendations to address the challenges facing the United States," Archey concluded.

"Leading by Leveraging Culture" - Award Winning Article from Prof Chatman
Congratulations Institute Professor Jennifer Chatman who, along with co-author Sandra Eunyoung Cha, received the 2004 California Management Review Accenture Award for their article "Leading by Leveraging Culture".  The award is given annually to the article which has made the most important contribution to improving the practice of management.
Chatman shares her research findings
with 2004 Institute class.
Drawing upon her wealth of research in organizational culture, post merger integration, and management, Chatman shares leadership tactics that drove the success of CompUSA, Walt Disney, Schwab, General Electric, E*Trade, Cisco, Dreyers, and Southwest Airlines.

Recent Institute alumni will recognize Chatman and Cha's findings that powerfully effective cultures display three criteria: a high level of agreement, a high level of intensity, and an emphasis on innovation.  Their article prescribes the following three tools leaders can use to help develop, manage and change their company's cultures to meet these three criteria:

  • Recruit & Select People for Cultural Fit: One can foster powerful culture by emphasizing person/culture fit in addition to person/job fit. To increase long term contributions of new hires, trade-off entry job skills in favor of better cultural fit.
  • Manage Culture Through Socialization & Training: Utilize socialization to clarify cultural values and create strong bonds so that employees will hold each other accountable for upholding those values.
  • Manage Culture Through the Reward System: Link the informal cultural reward system to the formal company reward system to ensure a clear, consistent and comprehensive message of company values.

In addition to teaching the Organization & Culture segment of the 2004 Institute, Jenny Chatman is the Paul J. Cortese Distinguished Professor of Management at the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley.

Technology Ventures: From Idea to Enterprise  - A New Book from Co-Director Byers

Download Preface
Purchase Book

This summer Institute Co-Director and New Venture Lab creator, Tom Byers released Technology Ventures: From Idea to Enterprise, the first textbook to thoroughly examine technology entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship empowers individuals to seek opportunity where others see insurmountable problems.  Byer's new work explores the entrepreneurial leadership style unique to high tech start-up businesses where principled decision-making skills are used to identify high-potential, technology-intensive commercial opportunities, gather resources (talent & capital), and manage rapid growth and significant risks.

Designed for individuals in industry and government who seek to learn the essentials of technology and  entrepreneurship, as well as for students in colleges and universities, the book serves as a comprehensive collection of concepts, applications and tools

necessary for success in starting and growing a technology enterprise. It provides examples, exercises, cases, and sample business plans integrating the most valuable entrepreneurship and technology management theories.

Institute alumni since 2000 will recognize Tom Byers as the man who helped establish the Stanford Technology Venture Program and designed the Executive Institute's New Venture Lab component.

Alumnus to Receive AeA Medal of Achievement

Mr. Levy received the first AeA/Stanford Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2002.  In 2004 he returned as a CEO guest speaker.

1982 AeA/Stanford Executive Institute Alumnus Richard Levy, Ph.D., Chairman, President, and CEO of Varian Medical Systems, will be the 50th recipient of the coveted AeA Medal of Achievement Award, to be presented at AeA’s Annual Dinner on October 7th at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA.

Mr. Levy joins a select group of high-tech leaders who have received the honor, including William Hewlett and David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, Ross Perot of Electronic Data Systems, Thomas J. Watson, Jr. of IBM, and Gordon Moore and Andrew Grove of Intel.

This new honor is not to be confused with the AeA/Stanford Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement, which Mr. Levy received in 2002.  The AeA Medal of Achievement is presented annually to recognize an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement and service of their community, the high-tech industry, and humankind. It is the highest award presented by AeA.

Mr. Levy was selected in recognition of his dedication to improving the health of others.  Having worked with Varian Associates Inc. since 1968, he was named CEO of spin off Varian Medical Systems in 1998.  Since then he has helped Varian Medical Systems provide high energy radiation machines and associated hardware and software for treating cancer, and x-ray tubes for imaging in medical, scientific, and industrial applications. With over 3,500 radiotherapy systems in place delivering treatments to more than one million cancer patients per year, including over 50% of all cancer patients in the U.S., the company holds a clear leadership position in this technology.
